Canonization of Father Damien de Veuster

Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities Attending Ceremony

Father Damien

Five sisters from the Hawaii-Southwest Region will be traveling to the canonization of soon-to-be Saint Damien de Veuster. Sisters Davilyn Ah Chick and Alicia Damien Lau, members of the Diocesan Damien-Marianne Commission, departed for Damien’s homeland of Belgium on October 1 with the group led by Bishop Larry Silva.

On October 5, Sisters Theresa Chow, Francis Regis Hadano and Marie Jose Romano depart for Rome. Both the Belgium-Rome and the Rome-only groups will arrive in Rome on October 6. Sr. Alicia Damien is escorting one of twelve Kalaupapa patients attending the canonization, and Sr. Marie Jose Romano is a member of the Hawaii Damien choir.

The sisters going from Hawaii will meet up in Rome with Sisters Patricia Burkard and Barbara Woody who will represent the congregation at the canonization along with Sisters Mary Laurence Hanley and Grace Anne Dillenschneider who will represent the Cause of Blessed Marianne Cope whose departure date in October 8th. While there, Sisters Mary Laurence and Grace Anne (departure Ocober 8th) will meet with some of the persons in Rome who work on the Cause of Blessed Marianne.

Blessed Damien’s canonization will take place at 10:00 a.m. CEDT in Rome on Sunday, October 11.  EWTN will televise the canonization ceremony for Father Damien. We recommend that you check your local EWTN television schedules closer to the October  10-11 dates.

Let us join in prayer those on the pilgrimages to this sacred event.
